Water Heater in New York: what to know
New York has cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers, so homes work hard in both directions: heating from November to March and cooling through July and August. Much of the housing stock is older walk-ups, brownstones and pre-war co-ops, where aging pipes, radiators and wiring are common.
- Incoming water is colder in winter, so an aging water heater often fails during the coldest months.
- Most tank water heaters last about 8 to 12 years; rusty water or moisture at the base are warning signs.
