Chimney & Fireplace in Boston: what to know
Boston winters are cold and snowy, with nor'easters that bring heavy snow and wind. Triple-deckers, brownstones and very old homes are common, often with aging plumbing, knob-and-tube wiring or ice-dam-prone roofs.
- Chimneys get heavy use in long winters; the National Fire Protection Association recommends a chimney inspection every year.
- Freeze-thaw cycles crack chimney crowns and mortar joints, letting water into the masonry.
- Many older chimneys have no liner or a cracked clay liner, which may need relining before the fireplace is safe to use.
